A Tunbridge Wells Photographer’s Guide for New Parents…

One of the most common questions I’m asked as a Tunbridge Wells newborn photographer is…

“What age is best for a newborn photoshoot?”

The truth is, there’s no single perfect age. Every stage of your baby’s first weeks brings something unique and beautiful. Whether your little one is just days old or already starting to smile, there’s magic worth capturing at every point.

Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the best timing for your newborn photography session in Tunbridge Wells.

5–14 Days Old: The Classic Newborn Photoshoot

This is what many people think of when they imagine a traditional newborn photoshoot.

During the first two weeks, babies are:

  • Very sleepy

  • Naturally curly and womb-like in their movements

  • Happy being gently tucked and swaddled

  • Settling easily between feeds

At this stage, we can capture:

  • Soft, delicate features

  • That “brand new” look that changes so quickly

  • Peaceful, curled-up poses

3–5 Weeks Old: Awake, Stretchy & Full of Character

If your baby is already a few weeks old, don’t worry at all. This stage brings a different kind of beauty.

At 3–5 weeks, babies often give us:

  • Gentle stretches and tiny yawns

  • More alert moments

  • Increased eye contact

  • Early hints of personality

Your baby is still wonderfully small, but with more expression and movement. These sessions feel very natural and relaxed, creating images that tell the story of how quickly your baby is growing.

6–9 Weeks Old: Smiles, Connection & Cuddles

By this stage, your baby is truly starting to wake up to the world.

This is a beautiful time to capture:

  • Early smiles

  • Bright, alert eyes

  • Gorgeous cuddly portraits

Many parents also tell me this is when they start to feel more confident and settled. You’ve found your rhythm, and that calm, loving energy comes through so naturally in your photos.

10 Weeks and Beyond: Personality in Full Bloom

At around three months, your baby’s personality is shining through.

You’ll often see:

  • Big, intentional smiles

  • Excitement when they see you

This stage is ideal if you want joyful, expressive images that capture connection and love. While poses are less “newborn-style,” these sessions are incredibly beautiful.

So… When Should You Book Your Newborn Photoshoot?

The best age for your newborn photoshoot is the one that feels right for you.
